Anna Heywood, founder of the Sound Impact Awards environmental accreditation scheme for Students' Unions, won Grass Roots Campaigner of the Year Award at the Observer Ethical Awards.

Anna came up with the idea to incentivise Unions to improve environmental and ethical practice during her post graduate study at the University of Northumbria, and worked with the NUS to ensure the scheme became a success.

Congratulations to Anna for this fantastic achievement and a huge thank you to all those who voted for Anna on line.

"The Sound Impact Awards have been officially recognised as a winning grassroots campaign and this is all due to the support of our fantastic student movement. This is their success too and I hope that they celebrate it as such."  Anna Heywood

"This is a fantastic endorsement of the hard work, commitment and vision of Anna. She has made a significant impact on the role of students' unions in the wider community, and I am delighted she has been given this national recognition.

Students' unions have fully embraced the Sound Impact Awards; NUS Services fully recognises our role in providing national leadership to our members on fighting destructive climate change. We are absolutely committed to the project going forward, and through ongoing improvements, we can enable organisations to use Sound Impact as the best solution to have a positive impact on the world in a fun, cost-effective and easy way".  Dave Lewis, Chair of NUS Services Ltd.

Sound Impact Gets Boost from The Carbon Trust - 30/11/2007

Sound Impact Awards

The Sound Impact Awards scheme, and all the good ethical and environmental work it has uncovered in students' unions, received a high profile public endorsement. Richard Rugg, Head of Public Sector at Carbon Trust, promoted the Sound Impact Awards scheme to over 80 delegates at the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme alumni event in London in November, congratulating the unions that participated for their efforts in tackling climate change. The event was attended by representatives from 50 higher education institutions including Vice Chancellors.
